Having a plan for epilepsy

An epilepsy management plan (EMP) gives essential information about how to help when someone has a seizure. It is vital for family, friends, caregivers, teachers, colleagues and anyone who may need to ensure safety, or provide first aid, during and after a seizure. Instructions for the online EMP are below.

For privacy reasons, the information will not be saved to our database so you must complete the EMP in one sitting and save to your device.

An EMP is a personalised plan that outlines how to support a person with epilepsy, including the steps to take before, during, and after a seizure, emergency seizure management and support needs.

The plan includes information about the person’s epilepsy, seizure types, triggers, and any specific instructions for managing seizures, including first aid and medication administration. It can be adapted for different settings, such as school, work, or recreational activities.

EMP’s are a practical tool that can be used by all caregivers in any setting to manage seizures, safety and seizure emergencies.  This will help to reduce both the impact of seizures on the person’s daily life and the risk of injury in the event of a seizure.

We recommend EMP’s are reviewed annually or if circumstances change

Our online EMP allows you to easily create your own EMP. You will get:

  1. a printable EMP,
  2. a seizure first aid plan, and
  3. an optional cover letter once complete.

The EMP will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete depending on the complexity. You will need to save this to your own device and/or print it.

For privacy reasons, the information will not be saved to our database so you must complete the EMP in one sitting and then save it. Therefore, before you begin, please ensure you have with you:

  • Your epilepsy and seizure type details (if known)
  • Your medication names
  • Any other treatment details such as epilepsy surgery
  • Your doctors contact details (if you wish to include)

When you are ready to start, click the yellow button on this page.

If you have been prescribed an emergency medication for seizure emergencies, you will also need an emergency medication management plan (EMMP).

Note: This form must be written and signed by the treating Doctor

There is a small group of people with epilepsy who have severe or even life-threatening seizures. These seizures are considered an emergency because they can be longer than usual (prolonged seizures) or happen in short succession one after the other (cluster seizures) with little or no recovery in-between.

Both of these situations can lead to a medical state called status epilepticus which can become life threatening.

Emergency seizure medications are prescribed for people who have had, or likely to have these seizure emergencies. These medications can be given in the community setting in an easy to administer route and work quickly to stop the seizure.

An EMMP is an individualised document that outlines the specific steps for administering emergency medication in the community.  It is completed and signed by the treating doctor and provides clear instructions for caregivers, including the seizure type, when to administer medication, dosage, route and emergency procedures.

We recommend EMMP’s are reviewed annually or if circumstances change

Your doctor may have their own EMMP form to complete or you can take this EAA form for them to sign. Emergency Medication Management Plan. You will also be able to download this form when you complete EAA’s online EMP.

Understanding epilepsy and seizures, recognising seizures, knowing seizure first aid, seizure management, and emergency response is an important part of managing epilepsy.

If someone is prescribed emergency medication for seizures, it is vital that caregivers and workers are trained to safely and correctly administer the medication. This helps with:

  • safe and effective medication administration
  • improved seizure management
  • reduced risks and improved outcomes

EAA offers the necessary training for safe management of epilepsy and seizures.
